YAKIMA, WA—The Yakima Women’s Soccer Association (YWSA) just completed its first outdoor season. The YWSA Facebook page shares the winners along with some photos. Of course the real winners are female soccer players in the Yakima Valley.
“The YWSA started in July of this year. A group of us felt the need for a league that was dedicated to female soccer players in our area with no other interests,” says League Administrator Vega.
Vega is heavily involved in soccer in Washington as the General Manager of the Evergreen Premier League’s Yakima United FC. He also works for the Washington State Adult Soccer Association and is GM of the Western Indoor Soccer League.
“Our first season we had six 7v7 teams. About 72 players. Not a ton but enough to start the league, which is all that matters. I think there’s the potential for this to become a really strong league with many more teams and hopefully offering different levels of play.”
The summer has come and gone, and the trophies have been awarded. Vega reflects on the season. “Our first season went really well ,some great competition, as expected we’ve been just learning how we want this organization to function. I think the league will just grow and continue to get better and better.”
What’s next for the YWSA? “Future plans are up in the air right now,” Vega says. “We know for sure we’re going to be doing another 7v7 season in the spring, much earlier than this last season. We’re looking into the possibility of moving indoors for some futsal but we’re not quite sure what that would look like or where we’d host it, but we’re exploring some options.”
